The first Pikmin game, inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto’s love for gardening, is a perfect example of how Nintendo creates engaging, vibrant and memorable gaming experiences that no-one else would think to make.
Now Nintendo has sprinkled a little of that magic dust on the Switch, bringing Pikmin 3 to a new generation of console and gamer with Pikmin 3: Deluxe. For those who have never played the prior games (either in Gamecube, Wii or Wii U form), here are the basics—you potter around a `mysterious world’ (which bears an uncanny resemblance to Earth) as a tiny little spaceman, collecting spaceship parts in order to travel home. To help find and carry such lost equipment, you enlist the help of Pikmin, colourful little creatures with flower buds on their heads, with different coloured Pikmin able to help you overcome various environmental hazards.
For veterans of the series, the core gameplay hasn’t changed—whistling your troops is still an important part of lining up your Pikmin army, and using different kinds of `min is vital in tackling bosses and armoured enemies. This Deluxe Edition, however, comes with a number of enhancements for the Switch. The biggest has to be the co-op mode, which enables two players to make their way through the main campaign on a single console.
Whether you’re playing alone or with a friend, however, you’ll get some added bang for your buck thanks to a new prologue and epilogue starring Pikmin and Pikmin 2 heroes Olimar and Louie. Beyond the headline additions, you’ll also find some quality of life improvements such as an improved lock-on targeting system, enemy balancing changes, multiple difficulty modes, optional hints and more, plus the Piklopedia to give you even deeper insights into the pikmin! Hardcore Nintendo fans and Switch newcomers alike are going to find something rich, fresh and engaging with Pikmin 3.
