Age of Wonders III Launches

This week sees the release of Age of Wonders III, the turn-based strategy game developed by the Dutch Triumph Studios. This game has been on the market in various guises since its inception as World of Wonders way back in 1999, and although the graphics have been overhauled, the concept and gameplay have remained faithful to the winning formula that has gained it a huge following in the gaming community.

Age_of_Wonders_3_Beholder_largeAge of Wonders III takes strategy gaming to new levels with its 4X (explore, expand, exploit and exterminate) principles where you strive to make your empire the dominant one. Each player constructs their society from one of six available species, choosing from humans, draconians, high elves, dwarves, orcs, and goblins, and adapting the unique abilities of their race to suit needs and intentions. Furthermore, there are six different classes a leader can be. The Sorcerer style of leader emphasizes the use of magic for enchantments and summoning powerful beings. The Theocrat constructs an organized religion based society breeding zealots, followers, and religious warriors. The Rogue-style leader favors less direct approaches to situations, employing stealth, thievery and political manipulation as well as using dark magic in both diplomacy and warfare. The Archdruid is a warlock-esque figure who channels the power of nature to their advantage by being very self-sufficient and being able to call upon wild creatures of the forest. The Dreadnaught heads a steampunk styled society, using large industry, machinery and armoury-units like cannons and tanks. Last but not least there are the Warlord-class who specialise in direct conflict and combat tactics.

The game is played via a series of hexagon tiles seen in the isometric and are used to expand an empire out into the world beyond. Because the game is essentially turn-based, it takes on aspects of RPG and becomes an intense strategy-fest where crushing your opponent becomes an exercise in guile. Out and out battles – whether conducted in the open field or as a city siege – take the form of combat within a separate hexagon grid-based 3D battlefield where units are designated both movement and space. Each side can lead up to six units into battle, and work to make best use of them in order to defeat their opponent in an intense battle of wits.

The latest version comes with a number of enhancements, including upgraded gameplay on the battlefield and intensive online multi-player modes that are sure to keep the ardent warrior in you entertained with many hours of excitement and potential extermination of your foes (real or imagined).

Age of Wonders III has been over three years in the making and represents a leap forward in the High Fantasy gaming world. While its launch was finally announced in October 2013, it has been in development since 2010, so there has been ample opportunity to dig out any bugs that may have snuck in there as well as polishing the gameplay. Initially only available for PC, Triumph is preparing to launch the game on Mac OS X later on in the year.

If you’ve not played Age of Wonders before, then you could do much worse than to go out and get yourself a copy, and if you’re an old hand at the genre but don’t have it, why aren’t you up the shops already!?

Far Cry 4 coming 2015

Far Cry 4 has been confirmed for a release sometime in the first half of 2015 and is to be set in the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, Eurogamer has confirmed.

It’s a drastic switch to move Far Cry away from the clear waters and sandy beaches of the tropics and into the hostile environment of the Himalayas. What the move does mean is the unique opportunity to ride elephants, which is awesome, for some!

Far Cry 4 is still a long way off but it’s understood that Ubisoft are hoping for a launch before the end of the 2014/15 financial year which would put a release date somewhere around March 2015.

Fear not though Far Cry fans, Far Cry 4 is set to be revealed in some form at Ubisoft’s annual E3 press conference in June. We can expect to see Far Cry 4 come to PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. There’s been no mention of Xbox 360 or PS3 versions, which is not surprising as it’s clear that developers are dropping last-gen now, take Assassin’s Creed Unity as a prime example.

It sounds like the Far Cry recipe isn’t changing too much. The style of gameplay in Far Cry 4 will remain loyal to the tried and tested fauna hunting of Far Cry 3 and the game world will be familiarly structured, outputs to liberate et al.

Looking back at the Far Cry 3 timeline with Far Cry 3 launching in November 2012 and Blood Dragon, 6 months later, we can assume Far Cry 4, when finished, will have had 2 years of development.

We’ll be looking forward to E3 in June, and of course bringing you news as it happens, when Ubisoft reveal more about Far Cry 4 as well as open-world racer The Crew and Assassin’s Creed Unity.

New gen Assassin’s Creed Unity revealed

Assassin's_Creed_Logo

For the past three years, the creators of Assassin’s Creed have been secretly hard at work in preparation for what is now the new generation of consoles, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Despite not being quite ready to reveal the latest in the Assassin’s Creed series, some coercion may have taken place and today, the world gets it’s first look at Assassin’s Creed Unity and bugger me backwards the graphics look INSANE!!!

There’s no release date or anything set yet but there’s promise of plenty of updates and news to come over the next few months. It’s reasonable to assume that come next Autumn, this is what all games are going to look like. We’ve since glimpses of it with The Division and Watch Dogs and it would appear devs are ditching Xbox 360 and PS3 and this is the sort of visual excellence we can expect from titles.

Rayman Legends comes to Xbox One & PS4

This morning, Ubisoft announced a little something about the hugely popular and very highly rated, Rayman Legends. Rayman Legends was a massively successful game in 2013, scoring a 91% Metacritic rating. Rayman Legends release date has been brought forward by 1 week and will now be available to Xbox One and PS4 gamers on February 21st 2014.

Rayman Legends Xbox One Globox Vaas - Ultimate Gaming ParadiseDue to the new-gen consoles – don’t think we can really call them next gen any more can we? – having so much more muscle under the hood, Rayman Legends has undergone some rewriting to take advantage of the additional resources available  to it on Xbox One and PS4. The award winning graphics are getting a boost, just to make it that much more sensational and, with all the processing power and RAM, loading times between  maps have been squeezed. Players on both Xbox One and PS4 will get exclusive costumes for Rayman, Globox: Splinter Ray and Ray Vaas. Solely on Xbox One will be a costume for Globox Vaas and likewise for Assassin Ray on PlayStation 4. You’ll also be able to buy the Funky Ray costume with Uplay points.

There’s exclusive to the Xbox One and PS4 features, respectively. Xbox One will come with 10 exclusive challenges to unlock Xbox Live Achievements but be warned, these achievements won’t be hanging round forwever. They’re time limited so you’ll need to get your skates on if you want to get them. The PlayStation 4 gamers amongst you will be able to put your controller’s touch pad to use with the ability to do things such as scratch Lucky Tickets. Furthermore, you’ll be able to produce and share screenshots and videos with the community and, Rayman Legends let’s you carry on the fun via your PlayStation Vita when your PS4 is off and you’re out and about, that is kinda cool!

Rayman Legends Xbox One Rayman Vaas - Ultimate Gaming ParadiseAs you may know, Rayman Legends is the sequel to the tremendously popular Rayman Origins. In Rayman Legends’ predecessor, Rayman and Globox stir from a 100 year nap while in the meantime, nightmares have infested the Glade of Dreams. Once again, Rayman and Globox are tasked by The Supreme Being Bubble Dreamer, with ridding the Glade of Dreams of evil and restoring harmony. Rayman Legends features tonnes of gameplay options, including the traditional Rayman gameplay as well as musical and rhythm based levels.

The exceptionally awesome and talented group of artists, designers and composers  responsible for creating Rayman Legends has returned with the advanced UbiArt engine that enables multi-dimension gampeplay, improved lighting and updated game rendering. All in all, the graphics of Rayman Legends are being taken to the next level that should really compliment the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Fallout New Vegas - Ultimate Gaming Paradise

Fallout 4 Hoax – Survivor 2299

War. War never changes. This is the most iconic quote we hear in the Fallout series and it has been three years since we’ve had another release. With Fallout 3 being released in 2008 and Fallout New Vegas being released in 2010, the pattern would dictate that we’re a year overdue for another game in this illustrious universe. Yet, there is no game.

Fallout New Vega Gas Mask - Ultimate Gaming ParadiseRumours of Fallout 4 being developed have been circulating since DLC stopped being developed for New Vegas. This is a given, as any dedicated fan base will actively attempt to find stories and hints of the next release in order to prepare themselves and, more importantly, start what many like to call a hype train. When gamers think of hype they are usually reminded of the colossal failure called Spore, but hype is usually a pretty good thing. Hell, just look at Game Dev Tycoon. There’s an entire feature of the game making process that involves generating hype which in turn improves sales and fan reception – assuming, of course, that the game is good and not a disappointment.

So, it was no surprise whatsoever, at least to me, that when a website called The Survivor 2299 went live a month ago that the hype train suddenly found itself accelerating rapidly. Fan tribute sites are rather common, so the question of why this was so deserving of attention from the fan base is a valid one. Beyond the fact that a simple WHOIS search determined that the website was registered by ZeniMax, the big daddy company for Bethesda, there were other factors at work that implied legitimacy. For example, the website contained a trademarked symbol that quite obviously cannot be used by anyone except the company that owns the rights (Bethesda). It also used somewhat elaborate methods to portray itself as a big mystery, such as using morse code to convey messages and having an ominous countdown that was slowly ticking itself down to zero.

Bethesda, sticking to their guns, said nothing. All media and fan inquiries went unanswered as is their policy when it comes to rumours so everybody was pretty much left to their own wits. Hoax, or truth? It was a difficult thing to answer, especially with there being evidence to support both claims. In hindsight, this hoax was excellently executed, although the man behind the magic said he had many more plans. You can actually read his Ask Me Anything (AMA) over on Reddit where he answered questions from the Fallout fan base. Some of the key points revealed that the website was found earlier than he would have liked, he had a few more tricks up his sleeve, and he had a CGI trailer he wanted to play on the website once the countdown ticked down completely.

Fallout 3 - Ultimate Gaming ParadiseNeedless to say, it was ambitious, and it worked incredibly well. The fan base was slowly but surely convinced that The Survivor 2299 was a legitimate reveal from Bethesda, and the only thing that finally stopped the hoax was Bethesda themselves. They had released a statement saying that all rumours were false, and then they contacted the hoaxer himself to put an end to things. Their message was short, but clear: Anything they didn’t release directly was a blatant lie.

Fans figured that although it was a hoax, it would at least encourage Bethesda to reveal Fallout 4 at the VGX 2013 convention that was held on December 7th. This didn’t happen. In fact, after all things were said and done, the fan base was left back where it started; no new game, no release, no reveal. The hype train met an unfortunate and rather abrupt end. Perhaps E3 2014 will be kind to these disheartened fans, me included.
